The Gadfly is a series of letters offering commentary on local issues and published in the Warrensburg Gazette.
Yee-Haw. Warrensburg's going to get branded and the cowboy with the branding iron is in town. That consultant fellow is going to round up all the little dogies (he calls them stakeholders), ask them what they think about getting branded, then convince them to heat up the iron and slap that brand on everyone's flanks. This is going to be an interesting process to watch. We've seen some pretty generic brands come out of Kansas ("it's bigger than you think") and Kansas City ("new discoveries daily"). Rustlers (and humorists) love those brands; it's easy to apply the running iron and change to something unintended or even funny. Mostly, these generic brands turn up when the place wants to be something besides what it is - no one will believe it if you say that old longhorn is a prize Hereford. There's certainly lots of possibilities. We could go for something like "the stealth capital" but that might wrangle up the wrong set of cayuses. We could go with something to promote our "down to business" attitude, since we will have a total lack of permanent festivals now that the Blind Boone Park people are going to quit trying after throwing five loops without catching Warrensburg's top stock. I do hope that they come up with something unique to Warrensburg that we can all use to promote education, industry, tourism, retail business and even the party scene. If I don't like the brand, I'll stay an unbranded maverick, but I still will think Warrensburg's a "DOGGONE GOOD PLACE" to be. |
