The Gadfly is a series of letters offering commentary on local issues and published in the Warrensburg Gazette.

Dear Editor

After two years, some good publicity, and a moneymaker for the Fair Board, our Corn Maze is gone TV & the Kansas City papers have stories of corn mazes in Kansas, instead. So why was ours discontinue? Vandalism! If you enjoyed the maze and know any of these vandals, tell them "thanks a lot."

I guess nothing newsworthy is happening in Warrensburg. On August 3rd, the local daily paper devoted 60 column inches to a story about air conditioning in Phoenix, Arizona. Ah, local relevance.

Actually, we do have one exciting event: the City finally got around to re-marking downtown parking spots. Somehow, the three in front of the Clothes Closet shrank a total of 9 feet.

Perhaps our elected leaders of Warrensburg & Johnson County need to meet with their counterparts in Sedalia and Pettis County. Maybe it's the different demographics of the two counties, but our neighbors to the east seem to have a much better handle on cooperative efforts. Sedalia city voters passed a sales tax extension to build a jail to be run by the county - can you imagine that here? The Sedalia sales tax is still below Warrensburg's.

If you really want to know about the city financial system and how city staff predicts the proposed "lease-purchase" financing will work, drop in on the Council work session next Wednesday (August 18th). If you can't find the time & location in the paper, call City Hall.

I'm going to take a look at the Traffic Plan tabled at Monday's City Council meeting. If there's anything exciting, I'll report on it next week.
